Peninnah, along with Hannah, were the two wives of Elkanah.

Peninnah became the mother of sons and daughters but, initially, Hannah was unable to have children. During the time of barreness, Peninnah taunted her.

Eventually, after prayers by Hannah and Elkanah, Hannah became the mother of Samuel, who became a prophet.

Peninnah is mentioned by name twice, in 1 Samuel 1:2, 4.

The name Peninnah means "coral."
