Perez was the first of twin sons born to Tamar after her encounter with Judah. During the birth, the brother of Perez, put out his hand first and the midwife tied a scarlet thread to it to mark the first born. But the hand was withdrawn and Perez came out first. This event gave him his name, which means "bursting forth." (Genesis 38:27-30). His brother's name is Zerah. Perez is an ancestor of David and Jesus.
