Elimelech was a native of Bethlehem in Judah. He was the husband of Naomi, and the father-in-law of Ruth.
He moved his family to Moab to escape the famine. His two sons married Moabite women, Orpah and Ruth. After the death of Elimelech and his two sons, Ruth chose to return to Bethlehem with Naomi (Ruth 1:16-17).
Ruth later married Boaz, a kinsman of Elimelech, who purchased Elimelech's land, and ensured that the estate would remain in the family.
