The Mount of Olives is located on the east side of Jerusalem. It is one of the most revered places for Christians. The view of Jerusalem from the Mount is one of the most spectacular scenes in the world. On its slopes are the Garden of Gethsemane, Bethany and Bethpage.

It was on the Mount of Olives where Jesus sometimes taught his disciples, where he began his Palm Sunday entrance into Jerusalem, where he prayed and sweated drops of blood, where he was arrested, and where he rose up to Heaven.

Zechariah 14 indicates that this is where the messiah (Jesus) will be when he returns, that his feet will touch the Mount and that it will split into two, from east to west, allowing the people of Jerusalem to escape a battle that will be raging in Jerusalem.

Today the Mount of Olives is dotted with many churches, including the Church of All Nations, the Church of Mary Magdalene, the Church of the Assumption (tomb of Mary), the Church of Dominus Flevit (the Lord wept), the Church of St. Lazarus, and the Chapel of the Ascension (marking the spot where Jesus ascended to Heaven).

There is also a large Jewish cemetery, there, as well as olive trees that date back 2000 years, in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Mount of Olives appears in 11 Bible verses: 2 Sam 15:30, Zech 14:4, Matt 21:1, Matt 24:3, Matt 26:30, Mark 11:1, Mark 13:3, Mark 14:26, Luke 19:37, Luke 22:39 and John 8:1.
