Basemath, the daughter of Elon, and Judith, the daughter of Beeri, married Esau when he was 40 years old, as explained in Gen. 26:34.

In the next verse, we're told that Basemath and Judith, both of whom were daughters of Hittite fathers, were a source of grief for Esau's parents, Isaac and Rebekah.

In Gen. 36:2, we are told that Esau had a wife named Adah who was the daughter of Elon the Hittite. Some scholars speculate that Adah's name was changed to Basemath at marriage. Also in this verse, we are told that Esau had another wife named Basemath, who was the daughter of Ishmael, and a sister to a woman named Nebaioth.

In Gen. 36:10, 13, 17, we learn that Basemath, the daughter of Ishmael, was the mother of a son named Reuel, and grandmother to Reuel's sons Nahath, Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah. The grandsons are listed as "chiefs" in Gen. 36:17.

Variants of the name Basemath include Basemeth, Bashemath and Basmath.

The name Basemath means "fragrant" or "perfumed."

There are two other women named Basemath in the Bible:

Basemath, daughter of Ishmael, wife of Esau

Basemath, daughter of Solomon, wife of Ahimaaz

Next person in the Bible: Basemath, daughter of Ishmael, wife of Esau
