Naboth owned a vineyard next to the summer palace of King Ahab of Samaria. Ahab wanted this property for a vegetable garden. He offered Naboth a choice between being given a better vineyard or money, but Naboth refused the offer, because it was a family inheritance to be passed on to his descendants.
Ahab's wife Jezebel, obtained the property for Ahab by bribing two men to bear false witness against Naboth, charging him publicly with treason. Naboth and his two sons were executed because of this false charge.
The prophet Elijah met with Ahab and predicted his doom over this deed. "Where dogs licked up the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick your own blood" (1 Kings 21:19). This prediction came to pass later when Ahab's body was returned from the battlefield at Ramoth-Gilead.
