Machir was the first born son of Manasseh and the grandson of Joseph (Genesis 50:23). He was known as a warrior and had captured the towns of Gilead and Bashan (Joshua 17:1). At the time of the conquest of the Promised Land, his descendants had become the largest family within the tribe of Manasseh. Machir's clan received a large portion of land east of the Jordan River from Moses. Machir means "hireling."
