She became Abraham's wife after Sarah died. In 1 Chronicles 1:32 she is described as Abrahams concubine, and gave Abraham six sons, Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. Abraham gave his six sons gifts but "sent them away from his son Isaac, eastward to the east country" (Gen. 25:6). These men became founders of six Arabian tribes. This made it clear that Isaac is the only son of Abraham to be the legitimate heir.
The name Keturah means "incense."
