At God's command, the prophet Hosea named his first son Jezreel. The name is symbolic and signifies the slaughter that God would bring on the house of Jehu for the bloodshed at Jezreel (Hosea 1:4). Jezreel is a valley in northern Israel where Jehu brought the dynastry of Omni to an end through bloodshed (2 Kings 9). This happened about 100 years before the birth of Hosea's son, Jezreel. Jehu's dynasty did come to an end with his great-great-grandson, Jeroboam 2, who was a unlawful ruler.
