An early Christian who denied the faith. He is mentioned in two epistles. In 1 Timothy 1:19-20, "...some by rejecting conscience, have made a shipwreck of their faith, among them Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme." In 2 Timothy 2:17-18, "and their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have deviated from the truth by saying that the resurrection had already taken place and are upsetting the faith of some."
