In the beginning
The Bible opens with the story of creation, explaining that God created the world and everything in it:
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1, WEB)
The book of Genesis is the first and oldest book within the Christian Bible. There are 39 books in the Old Testament and 27 books in the New Testament.
The Old Testament was written during a period of time that lasted about 1,000 years, beginning about 1400 BC (3,400 years ago), and ending about 400 BC (2,400 years ago).
The New Testament was written and circulated during the first century of this era, about 2,000 years ago. It focuses on the death, resurrection, and teachings of Jesus, who is the savior (the Messiah) who was promised by the prophets of the Old Testament.
The first chapter of Genesis focuses on the creation of the world. When God created the world, it was perfect. But, Adam and Eve later brought sin into the world, which caused corruption.
The rest of the Bible focuses on the problem of sin, which causes a separation between humanity and God, and the need for a solution, which is the Messiah, who resolves the problem of sin by suffering and dying for the sins of others.
Next: Adam and Eve bring sin into the world; God promises a solution (the Messiah)
