Bible passage: Ezekiel 21:26-27
Prophet: Ezekiel
Written: About 2,600 years ago
The prophet Ezekiel lived about 2,600 years ago, during the time when the Neo-Babylonian Empire was expanding and subjugating the Kingdom of Judah, in southern Israel.
He correctly predicted that the House of David would produce no more kings until the Messiah arrived:
26 the Lord Yahweh says: "Remove the turban, and take off the crown. This will not be as it was. Exalt that which is low, and humble that which is high. 27 I will overturn, overturn, overturn it. This also will be no more, until he comes whose right it is; and I will give it."' (Ezekiel 21:26-27, WEB)
This is a remarkable prophecy, that has proven to be remarkably accurate, as explained in the book, 100 Fulfilled Bible Prophecies.
The crown refers to the House of David, which had handed down the crown for 20 generations of kings in Jerusalem, since the time of King David. With these words, Ezekiel is prophetically revealing that there would be no more ordinary (and corrupt) kings from the House of David until the Messiah arrived.
The Messiah, as promised in other prophecies, including 2 Samuel 7:12-16, would be a descendant of King David, as in a son born to the House of David. Ezekiel's prophecy is predicting that the next king from the House of David would be the Messiah himself.
The Messiah is identified in verse 27, with the phrase, until he comes whose right it is, which is Messianic, as established in an earlier prophecy, in Genesis 49:10.
Ezekiel lived during the time of King Zedekiah, who was the 20th and final king from the House of David. He died as a prisoner in Babylon about 600 years before Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
History has proven Ezekiel's prophecy to be remarkably accurate. From the time of Zedekiah to the time of Jesus, there were no new kings from the House of David, and since the time of Jesus, there have been no new kings from the House of David, as explained in the book, Jesus the Messiah, by Ray Konig.
